3D Photo Gallery in Flash CS4

pic1

The new AS3 3D methods available in Flash Player 10 and Flash CS4 make it possible to literally ‘build’ 3D objects contaning many other display objects as children. Such 3D objects can then be easily rotated in 3D using the rotationX, rotationY, and rotationZ properties. In this tutorial we easily build a 3D gallery of photos on a cylinder:

Lists of keyboard modifiers in the Flash CS4 motion model – lets you do more stuff

That’s right – do you want to do more “stuff” with your tweens? Often you have to know what keyboard modifiers to use, because functionality is not revealed in any other way. These modifiers are all documented, but I thought I would put them down in a handy list you could reference or print out (or whatever you want to do).

Misconceptions about how Flash CS4 implements 3D

“The reality is that there very little 3D code inside the player, at least native code. Whenever you export a movie that uses the new “3D” features, you’ll notice that about 13KB of AS3 code is attached to it. This code is responsible for the pseudo 3D rendering using same old tricks used by earlier 3D renderers. You see degradation in rendering because those vector objects are transformed into cached bitmaps and handled as texture over triangles. Bitmap resampling algorithms inside the player are pretty good, but not good enough in several situations like this one. The Flash IDE, however, does a good job by making completely transparent to the user that this 3D manipulation is not native to the player itself but rather to silently attached code.”

3D Texture Mapping with ‘drawTriangles’ in Flash CS4 and AS3

In this experiment, we examine the ActionScript 3 method ‘drawTriangles’ which is new to Flash Player 10 and Flash CS4. This method is particularly useful for 3D texture mapping and we use it to create a collection of planets displayed below.

Flash CS4 files for motion tween presentation at FlashCamp

Here are the FLA and SWF files (Flash CS4 and Player 10) for today’s presentation at FlashCamp on new motion in Flash and using Tween instance (contains that ActionScript).

Simple 3D Dynamic Drawing in Flash CS4

Flash CS4 supports many new ActionScript 3 classes and methods. In particular, it provides methods that make manipulating objects in 3D much easier. Flipping images, text fields, and other flat display objects has become very simple. See our Player 10 tutorial: ‘Getting Started with 3D Methods in Flash Player 10′. (Use Beta 2 versions.) Dynamic drawing in 3D is much easier, too, altough it does require the use of Matrix3D and Vector3D classes. This tutorial covers basics of dynamic drawing in Flash CS4 done in the simplest possible way.

Creating and Applying a Custom Ease

There have been quite a number of improvements to how you create and modify animations in Flash CS4. One of the big areas was in the area of easing. Instead of having easing be applied to a tween as a whole, you now the ability to apply easing to each property individually instead.

Understanding Flash CS4 Motion XML

John Mayhew from Flash authoring here. This is my first blog entry here and I wanted to take some time to describe the XML schema we use to store motion presets in Flash CS4. First I’d like to give you some background. The new animation model in Flash CS4 was built from the ground up over the last several years. It started as an idea I pitched at the end of our Flash 8 cycle at Macromedia. We assembled a team and started development in Flash 9 and continued through into Flash 10 and eventually shipped it as part of CS4. It was the culmination of tons of hard work by many, many people including our very own Jen DeHaan! We are all very proud of the feature and hope our users find that it does indeed “kick ass” as Jen likes to put it.
